When “Healthy” Becomes an Obsession

You can enjoy health without letting it take over your life. Here’s how I learned to recover from orthorexia.

The invitation to daily rest ✨

Hello dear friend,

In today’s episode, I open up about a season in my life when healthy eating quietly became an obsession. I started out with good intentions — getting in shape, supporting my hormones, and simply taking care of my body. But over time, I found myself trapped in a prison of my own making: I became obsessed with eating the “perfect” diet, and it began to weigh heavily on my mental and emotional health.

Eventually, I learned about a condition called orthorexia nervosa, an unhealthy fixation on eating healthily, and it helped me make sense of my experience. Recognising this allowed me to see that my approach to health was actually undermining my overall wellbeing, and to notice the subtle societal pressures around food and “perfect health” that had quietly shaped my habits.

In this episode, I share my personal journey and the steps that helped me cultivate a gentler, more joyful relationship with food — one that honours my body while keeping God, rather than my diet, at the centre of my daily focus.

If you’ve ever struggled with feeling controlled by food, striving for perfection, or moralising what you eat, this conversation is for you.

Here are a few takeaways from the episode:

💓 Healthy eating shouldn’t control your life: it’s meant to support your well-being, not dominate it.

💓 Wellness culture can sneak in quietly: moralising foods or striving for perfection can harm your mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

💓 Faith helps restore perspective: keeping God at the centre allows health to serve your life, rather than the other way around.

💓 Freedom comes with gentleness: being mindful of your choices whilst being kind to yourself creates a healthy, sustainable relationship with food.

💓 You’re not alone: many of us wrestle with food, perfectionism, and societal pressures. Healing is possible with God, and a little awareness.
